ARLINGTON, VA — A 24-year-old Arlington man is facing felony charges after allegedly striking a police officer with his vehicle and fleeing the scene early Saturday morning.

The crash happened just before 4 a.m. on May 17, along the 1600 block of South Eads Street. Two Arlington County officers were on a traffic stop, outside their vehicles, when an unrelated car passed by and hit one of them—then kept going.

Medics rushed the injured officer to the hospital with serious, but thankfully not life-threatening, injuries. He’s now back home recovering.

A few hours later, police found the vehicle abandoned nearby and were able to identify the driver. That afternoon, Anthony Aquice, 24, turned himself in and was arrested. He’s now being held without bond at the Arlington County Detention Facility and has been charged with felony hit and run.

“This crash is a sobering reminder of the dangers officers can face each time they step onto the roadway to assist travelers, investigate crimes and conduct traffic enforcement,” Arlington Police Chief Andy Penn said in a statement.

He’s urging drivers to slow down and move over when they see emergency lights. “It’s not only the law, it may also save a life.”

The investigation is still ongoing. Police are asking anyone with information to call their tip line at 703-228-4180.
