Arlington residents are invited to gather at Shirlington Library Plaza on Thursday, August 28, for a powerful evening of remembrance and connection. The event marks the 4th Annual International Overdose Awareness Candlelight Vigil, hosted by the Arlington Addiction Recovery Initiative (AARI). It begins at 7 p.m.
This isn’t just a ceremony. It’s personal.
For many in Arlington, overdose isn’t a distant issue—it’s touched families, friends, and neighbors. At this vigil, attendees will hear real stories of loss and recovery, shared by community members who’ve lived them. Toward the end of the evening, the names of those lost to overdose will be read aloud, followed by the soft glow of candlelight held in their memory.
Local officials, including members of the Arlington County Board and leaders from the Department of Human Services, will speak at the event.
AARI, which has been leading this work since 2017, brings together first responders, public health professionals, and community advocates to combat addiction in Arlington. This vigil is part of a global campaign—International Overdose Awareness Day—that urges communities to acknowledge grief, reduce stigma, and take action.
“This event is a moment for healing and for raising awareness,” said one AARI organizer. “No one should feel alone in this.”
The event is open to all. Whether you’ve been personally impacted or simply want to show support, you’re encouraged to come.
