A suspected shoplifting incident escalated into a violent robbery that left a store employee injured on June 1.
Police say a man entered a business and allegedly concealed merchandise before being confronted by an employee. The encounter escalated into a physical altercation during which the suspect allegedly knocked the employee to the ground and continued the assault.
After fleeing the business on foot, the suspect was located by a responding officer near 10th Street North and North Irving Street.
The employee suffered minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital.
Jerrell Smith, 34, of Alexandria, was arrested and charged with Robbery and Malicious Wounding. He was held without bond.
