Pedestrian Killed in South Glebe Road Crash in Arlington

ARLINGTON, Va. — Arlington County police are investigating a crash that killed a pedestrian Sunday night along South Glebe Road.

Police and firefighters were called to the intersection of South Glebe Road and 14th Street South at about 8:51 p.m. on Aug. 16.

According to the preliminary investigation, a driver was traveling south on South Glebe Road when the vehicle struck a woman who was in the crosswalk.

The woman suffered critical injuries and was taken to an area hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Police have not released her name while authorities work to notify her family.

The driver was the only person in the vehicle and remained at the scene after the crash, according to police.

The investigation remains underway, and police have not announced whether speed, impairment or other factors may have contributed to the collision.

The crash adds another fatality to the continuing concerns surrounding pedestrian safety on Arlington’s heavily traveled roads. South Glebe Road is a major north-south route through the county, carrying drivers through residential neighborhoods and commercial areas where pedestrians regularly cross the roadway.

Police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash or has other information about what happened to contact Detective R. Williams at RDwilliams@arlingtonva.us or 703-228-4237.
