ARLINGTON, Va. — Arlington County police have arrested a 51-year-old Arlington man accused of opening fire toward a crowded basketball court at Gunston Middle School following an argument during a game.

Adrian Dwight Taylor faces nine counts of attempted malicious wounding, along with charges of shooting on school property, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, reckless discharge of a firearm, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of ammunition by a convicted felon, according to the Arlington County Police Department.

Taylor is being held without bond at the Arlington County Detention Facility.

The arrest comes more than three weeks after gunshots sent police to the 1400 block of 28th Street S. at about 9:56 p.m. on July 25.

Police say Taylor had been playing basketball with several other people at the Gunston Middle School courts when a verbal dispute broke out involving multiple people. Investigators allege that Taylor then went to his vehicle, retrieved a firearm and fired several rounds toward the occupied court.

Numerous people were still on the court at the time, police said, including many juveniles.

Despite the number of people present, police reported no injuries or property damage. The suspect left before officers arrived.

Detectives with the department’s Homicide/Robbery Unit investigated the shooting and said they recovered evidence linking Taylor to the incident. Police obtained arrest warrants and took Taylor into custody in the 2400 block of S. Army Navy Drive during the early morning hours of Aug. 17.

The investigation isn’t over.

Police believe there could be additional victims who have not yet been identified, particularly given the number of young people who were at the basketball courts that night. Investigators also said juvenile victims and witnesses may be reluctant to speak with police.

Anyone who was at the courts during the shooting or has information about what happened is being asked to contact the Arlington County Police Department Tip Line at 703-228-4180 or ACPDTipline@arlingtonva.us.

The charges are accusations, and Taylor is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
