ARLINGTON, VA — A 29-year-old Maryland man was arrested after police said a reported shoplifting escalated into a robbery and assault at a business on the 1100 block of South Hayes Street.
Arlington police responded at approximately 7:08 p.m. after receiving a report of an assault. Investigators determined that a man allegedly entered the business, collected merchandise and left without paying.
An employee confronted the suspect in the 1300 block of South Joyce Street, where police said the suspect physically assaulted the employee. Officers arrived and took the suspect into custody.
The employee suffered injuries described as non-life-threatening and was transported to an area hospital for treatment.
Police said suspected narcotics were also recovered during a search of the suspect following his arrest.
Omar Jabbar, 29, of Capitol Heights, Maryland, was arrested and charged with robbery and possession of a Schedule I/II controlled substance.
