A man armed with a boxcutter caused a major disturbance at the Fairfax Drive Metro station early Friday morning, ultimately leading to a violent confrontation with law enforcement.

Officers responded to reports of a disorderly individual throwing objects at bystanders. Upon locating the suspect, later identified as Joseph Powell, 32, of No Fixed Address, police attempted to subdue him after he ignored commands to drop the weapon. A taser was deployed, and with the aid of backup, officers were able to take him into custody.

While detained, Powell allegedly kicked one of the officers. He was arrested and charged with Assault on Police and Obstruction of Justice. The Metro Transit Police have taken over the investigation for incidents occurring inside the metro system.
