An alleged shoplifting incident at a business on South Hayes Street escalated Sunday night when a suspect reportedly assaulted a police officer during an arrest attempt.
According to Arlington police, officers responded to a reported larceny after a man allegedly concealed merchandise and left the store without paying. Responding officers located the suspect nearby and issued commands, which police said he ignored.
As officers attempted to take him into custody, the suspect allegedly resisted arrest and struck one officer, causing minor injuries. Additional officers responded to assist with the arrest.
During the investigation, police said the suspect provided false identifying information. Officers also recovered suspected narcotics and burglarious tools during searches conducted at the scene and later during booking.
Victor Lopez Pastilla, 24, of Fort Washington, Maryland, was arrested and charged with assault on police, obstruction of justice, possession of a Schedule I/II controlled substance, identity theft, possession of burglarious tools, delivery of drugs to prisoners, and shoplifting. He was held without bond.
The investigation remains ongoing.
