ARLINGTON, Va. — Arlington police are investigating the death of a 62-year-old man who experienced an apparent medical emergency while being held at the Arlington County Detention Facility and later died at Virginia Hospital Center.
The Arlington County Sheriff’s Office identified the man as Tyrone Hines. Officials said he died Aug. 10 after being transported from the jail to the hospital.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, a deputy was alerted at about 7:49 a.m. when an emergency call button was activated inside Hines’ cell. The deputy found Hines experiencing what authorities described as an apparent medical emergency and called detention facility medical staff.
Medical personnel began emergency treatment and lifesaving measures, according to the county. The Arlington County Fire Department was also called and continued providing emergency care after arriving at the detention facility.
Hines was transported to Virginia Hospital Center, where medical personnel continued efforts to save him. He was later pronounced dead in the hospital’s emergency department.
Hines had been held at the Arlington County Detention Facility since July 30, 2025, on an attempted robbery charge, according to authorities. Officials said his family has been notified.
The Arlington County Police Department is investigating the circumstances surrounding Hines’ death. The Sheriff’s Office said it is cooperating with that investigation.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine Hines’ cause and manner of death. The Sheriff’s Office also plans to conduct a separate administrative investigation and mortality review.
Authorities have not announced a cause of death. The description of the incident as an apparent medical emergency comes from the Sheriff’s Office and remains subject to the findings of the investigations and medical examiner.
