At approximately 12:27 p.m. on May 26, police were dispatched to the report of an armed robbery. Upon arrival, it was determined the male suspect allegedly entered the business, collected merchandise and attempted to exit without payment, during which he was confronted by loss prevention personnel. The suspect then made threatening statements implying a weapon before exiting the store and fleeing the scene on foot. A lookout was broadcast and responding officers located the suspect in the area of 15th Street S. and S. Hayes Street. The suspect was noncompliant, resisted arrest and with the assistance of additional responding officers, he was taken into custody. During the course of the investigation, burglarious tools and suspected narcotics were recovered and it was determined he stole merchandise from the business during a separate incident on May 21. Gardiner Sanders, 39, of Washington DC was arrested and charged with Robbery, Petit Larceny, Possession of Burglarious Tools, Possession of Schedule I/II Narcotics and Obstruction of Justice. He was charged with Grand Larceny and Stolen Property with Intent to Sell for the May 21 incident. He was held without bond.
