Arlington, Va. – A substitute teacher assigned to Washington-Liberty High School has been arrested on charges related to an inappropriate sexual relationship with a student. The Arlington County Police Department’s Special Victims Unit announced the arrest of Timothy McGhee, 47, of Alexandria, on January 10.
The investigation began on January 3, after police received information alleging that McGhee had initiated a sexual relationship with a juvenile female student, which reportedly began in September 2022. McGhee has been charged under Virginia law with Taking Indecent Liberties with a Child by a Person in a Supervisory or Custodial Relationship (§ 18.2-370.1) and Stalking (§ 18.2-60.3).
Details of the investigation are limited due to restrictions under Virginia law, but detectives say McGhee’s background includes extensive interactions with youth. In addition to his role as a substitute teacher, McGhee previously volunteered with local church youth groups and taught in other Northern Virginia school systems.
Police are concerned there could be additional victims and are urging anyone with information or experiences involving McGhee to come forward. Detective S. Yanda is leading the investigation and can be contacted at 703-228-4244 or via email at syanda@arlingtonva.us.
This is an active investigation, and Arlington County Police are emphasizing the importance of reporting any inappropriate behavior involving McGhee, whether recent or in the past.
